TypeTransgeneCartagena
SpeciesMus musculus
Strain nameC57BL/6J-Tg(Camk2-mutPolg)1Bsi
Former Common nameBipolar Disorder Model Mouse
H-2 Haplotype
ES Cell line
Background strainC57BL/6JJcl
Appearance
Strain developmentDeveloped by Drs. Takaoki Kasahara and Tadafumi Kato at RIKEN BSI in 2001. The mutant POLG coding fragment including the CaMKII alpha promoter was injected into the pronuclei of C57BL/6J fertilized eggs.
Strain descriptionBipolar disorder, a mood disorder marked by alternating periods of manic and depressive episodes, affects approximately 1% of the global population. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been seen in patients with bipolar disorder. Moreover, patients with mitochondrial disorders sometimes display mood disorders. This transgenic mice express mouse mitochondrial DNA polymerase (POLG) having a point mutation D181A under the control of CaMKII alpha promoter. The mutant mice exhibited characteristic behavioral phenotypes in accordance with criteria for the validation as an animal model of mood disorder. This strain is useful to investigate the cause of bipolar disorder and to develop new mood stabilizers to treat bipolar disorder.
Colony maintenanceBackcross to C57BL/6 (hemizygote male x 57BL/6JJcl female)Don't use Tg female for breeding in order to prevent transmission of mutated mtDNA.
