Strain development1964年、Anthony Searle、MRC Radiobiology Unit, Harwell, UK. Genetic Variants and Strains of the Laboratory Mouse, 2, 1459参照。(C3H♀×101♂)×Ta/Y 前核期にX線照射して得られたsemi-sterile雌が起源。この雌はTa/+でありながら、表現型は野生型となる。原因は正常X染色体が体細胞で不活性化しているため。
Strain descriptionXと16番染色体との相互転座。不活性化センターが16xにあるため、X16は不活性化出来ない。16xが不活性化すると遺伝的にアンバランスが生じ、淘汰される。結局正常X染色体が不活性化した細胞が生き残り、ヘテロ接合体でも表現型はホモ接合体と同じになる。巾広く利用されている。
Colony maintenance雄は不妊の為、semi-sterileの雌で維持する必要がある。通常野生型の雌にTaの雄を交配し、wild-typeの雌とTa雄のみを残し、交配を継ける。wild-typeの雄はcarrierで不妊。Taの雌はX/Xである。着床数は正常雌の半数以下、受精後、7.5日目でほぼ半数が消失している。従って、なるべく多くの雌を飼う必要がある。
