Strain developmentDeveloped by Aruga J (Aruga J et al. J Neurosci 18, 284-293, 1998).The mice were frozen-stored at 2-cell stage after in vitro fertilization between a heterozygous male and C57BL/6J females. Live mice were recovered and born on April 28, 2003.Deposited to RIKEN BioResource Center, RIKEN Tsukuba Institute in 2002.
Strain descriptionZic genes encode zinc finger proteins. These genes are homologs of the Drosophila pair-rule gene odd-paired. This strain was developed to clarify the function of Zic1 gene. Homozygous Zic1 deficient mice show remarkable ataxia during postnatal development, and die within 1 month. Their cerebella are hypoplastic and missing a lobule in the anterior lobe. A bromodeoxyuridine labeling study indicated a reduction both in the proliferating cell fraction in the external germinal layer (EGL), from embryonic day14, and in forward movement of the EGL (Aruga J et al. J Neurosci 18, 284-293, 1998).
Colony maintenanceMice were maintained by successive backcrossing heterozygotes to C57BL/6 mice.
