Strain development | Developed by Shigeyoshi Itohara, Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University in 1995. The construct was electoroporated into E14 ES cells derived from 129P2/OlaHsd. The mutant mice were backcrossed to C57BL/6J. |
Strain description | Gfap knockout mice. Immediately downstream of the endogenous start codon of Gfap was replaced with a cassette, containing a promoterless lacZ and pgk-neo. Gfap, glial fibrillary acidic protein is an intermediate filament protein specifically expressed in astrocytes. Homozygous mutant mice develop normally and not show any detectable abnormalities in the anatomy of the brain. But, exhibit a impairment of long-term depression (LTD) and PF-Purkinje cell synapses and eyeblink, suggested that the Gfap is required for communications between Bergmann glia and Purkinje cells. |
Colony maintenance | Homozygote x Homozygote [or Crossing to C57BL/6JJcl]. Homozygous mutant mice are viable and fertile. |
References | Mice devoid of the glial fibrillary acidic protein develop normally and are susceptible to scrapie prions. Gomi H, Yokoyama T, Fujimoto K, Ikeda T, Katoh A, Itoh T, Itohara S Neuron, 14, 29-41 (1995). 7826639 |
