Strain development | Developed by Drs. Kamada Shinji and Yoshihide Tsujimoto at Osaka University Medical School in 1994. A neomycin selection cassette replaced most of coding sequences of exons 2 of the Bcl2 gene. The mutant mice were backcrossed C57BL/6J. |
Strain description | B6.129P2-Bcl2<tm1Tsu>. Bcl2, B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 gene is a major regulator of programmed cell death, initially identified through study of the t(14;18) chromosomal translocation in human B cell follicular lymphomas. This gene is expressed in variety of tissues and cell types in embryos and adults. Most of homozygous mutant mice displays growth retardation, smaller ears, short lives, polycystic kidney, atrophic thymus and sleep with accelerated apoptotic cell death of lymphocyes, and hair hypopigmentaion in the second hair follicle cycle. |
Colony maintenance | Backcross to C57BL/6 (Heterozygote x C57BL/6JJcl) |
References | bcl-2 deficiency in mice leads to pleiotropic abnormalities: accelerated lymphoid cell death in thymus and spleen, polycystic kidney, hair hypopigmentation, and distorted small intestine.
