Strain developmentDeveloped by Hitoshi Kikutani, Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology, Osaka University in 1994.
Strain descriptionCD40 knockout mice. Exon 3 of the CD40 was replaced with a neo cassette. CD40/Tnfrsf5 (tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member 5) is essential for T cell-dependent immunoglobulin class switching and germinal center formation. Homozygous mutant mice for CD40 targeted mutation exhibit impaired immunoglobulin class switching, and the germinal center formation was defective. Homozygous mice are viable and fertile.
